The Tibetan word gompha, also spelled gompa, means a "vihara". A gompha refers to a Tibetan monastery, the associated Tibetan community and institutions. Over 4000 gompas were established in Tibet, Mongolia and Lamaist Himalayas from the 10th-century onwards. The temples, caves and structures in the Tabo gompha are some of the most important Lamaist institutions in Himachal Pradesh and Ladakh. The murals and paintings on pressed clay walls of Tabo gompha are one of the ASI protected national monuments of India.

The Tabo caves are hill side caves near the 10th-century Tabo monastery. These were excavated and used for meditation purposes by Buddhist monks. One can get an aerial view of the monastery complex from the Tabo caves.
