This category contains photographs of microscopic drawings of mite species, drawn by the Dutch zoologist Anthonie Cornelis Oudemans.

Donations by Oudemans

[edit]

In 1942, he donated his collection of 5981 mite specimens (1316 species) to the Rijksmuseum van Natuurlijke Historie at Leiden, The Netherlands, a forerunner of Naturalis Biodiversity Center. When he died in 1943, he also legated 2045 sheets of his drawings of mites to the Museum. In the present category only the 1151 drawings of mites with a determination (species) are collected (communication by Naturalis staff). On the sheets we find notes on the sex, anatomy and life stage of the mites (nymph I/II, hypopus etc.), and sometimes references to Oudemans' publications in, for example, Abhandlungen des Naturwissenschaftlichen Vereins zu Bremen (Abh. Nat. Ver. Brem., since 1890), Mémoires de la Société zoologique de France (Mém. Soc. Zool. Fr., since 1888), Notes from the Leyden Museum (originally Notes from the Royal Zoological Museum at Leyden, Notes Leyd. Mus., 1880 (v.1) - 1914 (v. 36)[1]), Tijdschrift voor Entomologie (T.v.E, since 1857), and Tijdschrift der Nederlandsche Dierkundige Vereeniging (T.N.D.V., Leiden, since 1874), etc.

Collection at Naturalis

[edit]

The collection is curated by Naturalis Biodiversity Center, Leiden. An inventory was published by A.M. Buitendijk in 1945. The present photographs of Oudemans' mite drawings were donated to Wikimedia in a Wikipedian-in-residence project in 2015. As the uploader of the images is not an expert, he has to leave further up to date classification of the mite images to zoologists: your contribution is appreciated.

Note

[edit]

All binomial species names here are of the format Genus - Specific epithet - (Author) taken from a source database at Naturalis. Probably the systematic parentheses in (Author) do not follow the biological convention. Life stages found: Proto nympha, Nymph, Nymph(a) II, Deutonymph.
