NodeMCU is an opensource IOT platform[1][2]. It uses the Lua scripting language. It is based on the eLua project, and builds on ESP8266 sdk 0.9.5. It uses many open source projects, such as lua-cjson[3], spiffs[4]. It includes firmware which runs on esp8266 Wi-Fi SoC, and hardware[5] which is based on ESP-12 module. It supports esp8266, esp8285 and any esp32 modules[1][6], but still doesn't work with RISC-V based esp32-C3 NodeMCU modules.[7] These last one can be used with Arduino or ESP-IDF.Get Started - Development Board Overviews.
