Matadian, a 4,275 gross ton vegetable oil tanker, built in 1936 by Swan, Hunter& Wigham Richardson, Newcastle for the United Africa Co.
On 20.3.1944 she was torpedoed and sunk by U.66 in the Bight of Benin, while sailing independently from Port Harcourt and Lagos to the UK with a cargo of palm oil. The Master, Capt. C.G. Shorter, 38 crew and 8 gunners were rescued by HM Motor Launch ML282 and landed at Lagos.
