Mannerism is a style of the art history with heyday in the time 1530 to 1600 in Europe (with origin point in Italy after the death of Raffaelo Sanzio), in the Netherlands and Northern Europe also until to the 17th century. Sometime, the Mannerism is called as variant of the Late Renaissance, but sometime also as parallel style to the Late Renaissance with sources in the Late Gothic. However that be, in each case signifies the Mannerism the style of the visual arts (architecture, painting, sculpture, applied arts etc.) in the transition time between Renaissance and Baroque. The same term "Mannerism" is also applied to a style of the old porcelain painting and also in the sciences, however both have nothing to do with the style in the European visual arts of the 16th century. The term "Mannerism" is coming from Italian "maniera greca" and means: an individual style of creation in the kind of the antique Greece. The Italian "maniera nuova" is the style of the late Michelangelo Buonarroti. Great international events, how for instance the reformation and the following wars in the name of the religion, the discovery of America, the Council of Trent and not least the occupation and pillage of Rome by Habsburgian military units (1527 arrest of the Pope, see "Sacco di Roma") have essentially contributed to the arising of a new mentality at the creative artists in Europe manifesting in a new art style: the Mannerism.
