English: John Vincent Scanlan (1921-1945) was a fighter pilot in the United States Army Air Forces. During World War II, he was assigned to the 15th Fighter Group in Iwo Jima, flying P-51 Mustangs. On 23 June 1945, during a Very Long Range mission in attacking an airfield northwest of Tokyo, he was shot down by Japanese fighters and was seen to safely parachute by his wingman who held off the enemy aircraft while he floated to earth. After the war, it was later learned that on the ground he was captured by some women who were talked into releasing him to a civilian mob who murdered him.
