Schooner Jane Slade of Fowey, Tho. Slade master, off leghorn 1887. Signed (cut off) and dated 1887. Jane Slade a 170 ton fruit trade schooner. Built by C Toms & Son of Polruan-by-Fowey. The schooner inspired Daphne du Maurier to write of her as the Janet Coombe in the novel The Loving Spirit. The Janet Coombe figurehead was removed from the ship and is in place on an outside corner beam at Ferryside.[1][2]
