The maps in this category will not render into larger-size thumbnails for some reason, probably related to Bug T56744 - out of memory for large pngs near 35 MP. The commonalities are that they all have sizes ranging from about 12 Mpx to 35 Mpx. Scores of similar larger and smaller maps with various aspect ratios all render successfully into large thumbnails.
It may be relevant that of these, the maximum successful thumbnail size seems to be inversely related to the original image size, as can be seen in the following table. This means that within this range, smaller images can be rendered as larger thumbnails. The relationship is approximately:

Because the image previews on the file description pages have larger horizontal limits than they do vertical limits, his problem is more noticeable for landscape images than it is for square or portrait images. But the problem seems to exist for all of them.
Most, but not all of these images are indexed (8-bit) PNGs, but some are 24-bit PNGs. However, it seems that all PNG-8 images in this size-range have the problem, but not all PNG-24 images in this range have the problem.
