The Howard Building on the East side of First Avenue between James & Cherry Streets, originally known as the Tremont Block when it was built in 1890 by the Tremont Investment Company, comprised of Alexander B. Stewart (of the Stewart & Holmes Drug Co.), and bankers David N. Baxter and Abram Barker. Elmer H. Fisher was the architect. It was purchased by James D. Lowman in 1892 and later leased to William H. Howard, who opened his saloon on the ground floor in 1900 and put his name on the building. The pediment once displaying this name was removed after the 1949 earthquake.
