Snakes with horns appear in many Native American cosmologies and religions and are represented frequently in prehistoric North American art. They are particularly known by the names

  • Tcinto såktco (Alabama)
  • Uktena (Cherokee)
  • Unktehi or Unktehila (Dakota)
  • Unktehila or Ųȟcéǧila (Lakota)
  • Misi-kinepikw (Cree)
  • Msi-kinepikwa (Shawnee)
  • Misi-ginebig (Oji-Cree)
  • Mishi-ginebig (Ojibwe)
  • Pita-skog (Abenaki)
  • Sinti lapitta (Choctaw)
  • Olobit (Natchez)
  • Avanyu (Tewa)

These spirit being is sometimes represented with horns or antlers and sometimes appear with wings when specifically associated with the Draco constellation. Horned or ramhorned snakes also appear in Romano-British and Gallo-Roman mythology and art, usually in combination with gods considered equivalent to Mercury or Mars in Interpretatio Graeca or Romana.
