A holdout or nail house is a piece of property that did not become part of a larger real estate development because the owner either refused to sell or the owner's asking price was not met. Like spite houses they generally do not conform to the surrounding properties, but the difference is in their timing: holdouts pre-date their surrounding properties, while spite houses were built afterwards.
