The mosque was built in 1567 for Köse (Koca) Hüsrev Paşa, Beylerbeyi (Ottoman governor) at the time. It stands in the (ruined) Old Van (Eski Van). The name of the architect is uncertain, but mostly the great Mimar Sinan is cited. The mosque is also named ‘Hüsreviye Cami’ or ‘Kurşunlu Cami’ = Mosque with the lead (roof). On a site not on the web anymore the following information was given by the authorities: "Tuhfet ül-Mimarin, one of the sources about the life and works of Sinan the Architect states that the Husrev Pasha Mosque was built by Sinan. However, it is more probable that this mosque, like others in distant parts of the country such as Erzurum and in Damascus which have been attributed to Sinan were in fact built by architects either appointed or approved by Sinan." About the mausoleum of the complex: It is very questionable whether Hüsrev Paşa was ever buried here, since he had Mimar Sinan build a grave monument for him in Istanbul (the ‘Hüsrev Paşa Türbesi’ in the Yenibahçe neighbourhood / Fatih district).
