English: George Edmond Bigge Sr. (1885–​1977) was assistant secretary of Health, Education and Welfare and an official of the Social Security system for many years. From 1937 until 1946 he was the Republican member of the three-person Social Security Board. Dr. Bigge was born in Grayling, Mich., and grew up on a farm near Manistee, Mich. He attended Ferris Institute and earned a doctorate in economics from the University of Michigan. He taught in Michigan for several years and set up an education program for the Michigan State Penitentiary. From 1927 to 1937, he taught at Brown University and served as the chairman of its department of economics.[1][2]
