General Grant was an American 1,103-ton three-masted barque built in 1864, named after future U.S. President Ulysses S. Grant, at the time still a Union Army general. She had a 179-foot-long (55 m) timber hull, a 34-foot-wide (10 m) beam, and was 21 feet (6.4 m) deep.

On her way from Hobsons Bay, Melbourne, to London on May 14, 1866, General Grant crashed into a cliff and subsequently sank in a cave on Auckland Island's western coast, 300 miles (480 km) south of New Zealand's South Island. Out of a total of 83 people on board, 15 survived the sinking. They were stranded on the island for the next 18 months, during which time five more people died before they were spotted and rescued by the brig Amherst on November 21, 1867.
