A Garuda stambha is a tall pillar in front of a Vishnu temple with Garuda in namaste posture, facing Vishnu's sanctum. It sometimes stands on a platform, has a capital and may have Garuda on two or four sides on the top. The pillar may be inscribed in a script in use when the stambha was installed. They serve as landmarks, visible to pilgrims walking towards the temple from far.

Occasionally, Garuda stambhas are found all by themselves. This is usually a sign of a lost Vishnu temple.
