The Gandai Deur temple is an 11th century Hindu temple in Gandai village of western part of Chhattisgarh. This region is rich in Kalachuri era Hindu and Jain monuments.
The Deur temple of Gandai is an impressive temple with Kalinga and Chalukya influences. It was in ruins in the 19th-century, unsafe to visit from historic damage. The entire temple was disassembled and re-assembled back to its original form on a new foundation in late 1910s under the supervision of colonial era ASI officials.
The temple sits on a jagati with a saptharatha plan. The lower band of small panel artwork is rich in Hindu motifs and Ramayana panels. The upper section has larger panels and reliefs. The most notable of these are Bhairava (Shiva), Mahisasuramardini (Durga) and three of ten Vishnu avataras – Narasimha, Varaha and Vishnu. The triratha shikhara is impressive with a lion on sukhanasi. The central band of the upper section also include kama mithuna (amorous couples) scenes. The sanctum doorway is richly carved as well, with a Mahabharata scene on the lintel. Here the Pandava brothers are shown worshipping a Shiva linga. Above them is a Sanskrit inscription about the Pandava brothers and the Mahabharata context. The quality of stone carvings is very high, they almost appear to be finely polished wood.
