The Franco-Ethiopian Railway Company, officially the Compagnie du chemin de fer franco-éthiopien, was created in 1908 in order to take over from the Compagnie impériale des chemins de fer éthiopiens which had gone bankrupt the previous year. The Compagnie impériale, founded by Swiss engineer Alfred Ilg in 1894, build the 309 km railway section between Djibouti and Dire Dawa (Ethiopia), the first section of the projected Djibouti-Addis Ababa railway, finally completed in 1918. The Djibouti-Dire Dawa section was completed in December 1902.
