- Deutsch: Als Rösten oder auch Rotten (früher Röthen) — bezeichnet man einen der Arbeitsgänge zum Gewinnen von Pflanzenfasern beim Nutzhanf, Flachs, Jute und anderen Bastfaserpflanzen durch den Faseraufschluss.
- Beim Röstprozess werden die Pektine im Pflanzenstängel aufgelöst. Dieser ‚Pflanzenleim‘ verbindet die Fasern mit den festen Holzbestandteilen der Pflanze. In anschließenden Prozessen (Brechen, Schwingen, Hecheln) werden dann die einzelnen Bestandteile voneinander getrennt.
- English: Retting — a process used in the processing of fibre plants, such as the production of linen fabric from Flax plants.
- The process facilitaties separation of the plant fibers from the stem.
- Retting employs the action of micro-organisms and moisture on plants to dissolve or rot away much of the cellular tissues and pectins surrounding bast-fibre bundles, to produce natural textile fibers.
- It is also used in the separation of natural fibers from other fiber plants, to produce materials such as hemp and coir.
- Français : Le Rouissage — est la macération que l'on fait subir aux plantes textiles telles que le lin, le chanvre, etc., pour faciliter la séparation de l'écorce filamenteuse d'avec la tige.
- On fait rouir le chanvre ou le lin dans un routoir ou rouissoir. Le terme rouir vient du francique rotjan, qui signifie pourrir.
