English: The Ethel was a tree-masted iron barque built 1876 as Carmelo by Austin & Hunter in Sunderland for G. J. Hay, Sunderland. 1882/83 was the owner H. Gourlay & Co., of Glasgow. Sold in 1891 to Fenwick, Stobart and Co. Hobart and renamed Ethel. On the 2 January 1904 the barque Ethel ran ashore on Reef Head, near Cape Spencer (Yorke Peninsula). One crew member died trying to get ashore with a line, but the rest reached safety.^[1]^[2]^[3] The wreck today
Dimensions: length × beam × depth = 177.4 × 30.7 × 18.5 ft (54 × 9.3 × 5.6 m) and tonnage: 711 GRT, 689 tons.^[4]

There was also a schooner called Ethel sailing in the north-west of Australia in 1881.^[5]
