Ernest Trevor Spashett, known professionally as E.T. Spashett, designed various public buildings, housing and one religious building - the w:Church Army Chapel, Blackheath - which was one of the first modern chapels to be originally designed for a central altar. He renovated or extended many buildings, including w:Gorton Monastery which was designed by w:Edward Welby Pugin. He designed the cloister gate of the monastery, rebuilt the monks' accommodation around the cloister and added a gold wall cross which reflected onto the road - much of this work is now lost. As an apprentice he designed St Ives Town Hall. He was a pilot during World War II, and on being demobbed from the Royal Air Force, circa 1947, one of his first tasks for the Ministry of Works was the renovation of w:Alexandra Palace, including the necessary redesign of the great rose window, which lay smashed on the floor after an air raid. He was a project architect for Yates, Cook and Derbyshire, and for Austin Vernon, both of London. He specialised in church renovation, and was the architectural consultant for the Benedictines, working directly for Basil Hume before he became Cardinal.
