English: Ancient Roman grave markers are often inscribed Dis Manibus, "to the Manes," the spirits of the dead conceived of as divinized. The phrase is usually abbreviated (DM). In DMS, the additional S stands for sacrum, "sacred (rite)". The inscription is found even with some early Christian epitaphs.
