English: A diaphragm arch is a tranversal arch inside a building which supports a section of wall that can be seen from both sides. In terms of function, it
- supports a ceiling, a roof framing or, along with three other arches, a crossing tower
- strengthens several tranverse barrel vaults
- (sometimes) separates the chancel from the nave of a church.
Please note that
- The german word "Schwibbogen" seems to name several things according to the german wikipedia, including maybe the diaphragm arch : but the word diaphragm arch can't be used to refer to an outside arch between two buildings.
- Chancel arches are not necessarily diaphragm arches.
