Dappled light and shadow is produced when sunlight or other light is filtered through breaks in objects that provide major shade areas, such as tree canopy leaves and branches, giving pools of a dotted or broken light effect on other surfaces. A dappled light effect is often employed by Impressionist painters in particular.
