This category contains images of reliefs, statues, paintings and structures from Indian temples and monuments where the depicted symbol or icon or panel is not necessarily religious, but reflects the historic culture in the century in which the monument was completed. It had or has a cultural meaning, a form of communication or a sign that is interpreted in a cultural or social context. Examples include dance, sports, festivals, dress, secular fables, signs for meals or drinks or visitor conveniences, socio-economic activity and others found in mandapas, gateways, toranas, kitchens, dharmashalas attached to Indian temples, signs that forbid people of certain religions or class or a specific gender, and others. See scholarship of Cultural Iconography and Semiotics.
