English: Cross Priory was founded by Ballintober Abbey as a daughter house of Augustinian canons and confirmed in 1400. The house is possibly connected with the early foundation by St. Brendan on Inishglora, a small island in front of the Mullet Peninsula. The priory was suppressed c. 1584. Inishglora was dedicated to St. Brendan, the priory to the Blessed Virgin Mary, possibly also to the Holy Cross. See Gwynn and Hadcock, Medieval Religious Houses Ireland, p. 168; Lord Killanin & Michael V. Duignan: The Shell Guide to Ireland, p. 117 (entry for Belmullet); Thomas Johnson Westropp: The Promontory Forts and Early Remains of the Coasts of County Mayo. Part III. The Mullet (Continued). In: The Journal of the Royal Society of Antiquaries of Ireland, Sixth Series, Vol. 4, No. 1 (Mar. 31, 1914), pp. 67–83.
