English: Horses in side views such that the conformation can be evaluated easily. The horse should stand with good posture, head in a high but natural position. All body parts should be visible including the feet, and the head should be seen from the side. The horse should not wear any tack or equipment save from halter or bridle.
  • In the ideal case, the horse is in good body condition, groomed, not in winter coat, and is standing on level ground. The mane either falls on the far side of the neck or is braided. The legs are positioned directly below the torso, with the far foreleg positioned slightly behind the nearest one and the far hind leg slightly in front of the nearest one so all four legs can be seen.
  • Free-standing (not handler-presented) horses do often slouch and have their legs positioned farther under the torso. This can make even a well-built horse look like it has faulty conformation. Therefore, evaluating from such photos should be done with extra prudence.
  • Some breeds in certain areas are customarily presented for evaluation in exaggerated, "parked" poses. A few draft and driving breeds may be presented wearing surcingle and side-reins.
