Coat of arms of the Landgraves of Thuringia: Azure, a lion rampant barry of eight/ten argent and gules / gules and argent crowned or; also arms of the junior branch of the House of Thuringia, the w:Duchy of Hesse ("Lion of Hesse)
In the 12th century, w:Hessengau passed to the w:Landgraviate of Thuringia. As a result of the w:War of the Thuringian Succession (1247–1264) the former Thuringian lands were partitioned between the w:Wettin w:Margraviate of Meissen, which gained Thuringia proper, and the new w:Landgraviate of Hesse, which remained with the w:Ludovingians, descended from w:Louis I, Landgrave of Thuringia (died 1140). From that point on the Ludovingian coat of arms came to represent both Thuringia and Hesse. (See w:Hesse). Thuringia became a landgraviate in 1130 AD. After the extinction of the reigning Ludowingian line of counts and landgraves in 1247 and the War of the Thuringian Succession (1247–1264), the western half became independent under the name of "Hesse", never to become a part of Thuringia again.
