In 1879 the Corporation of the City of London made an agreement with the Royal Society of Arts which at the time ran the London scheme, that it would erect plaques in the square mile. This agreement has remained in place ever since. One plaque exists today to Dr Johnson, which was erected before this agreement in 1876 by Royal Society of Arts. The City of London scheme uses rectangle plaques.
