Located at the intersection of Seventh and Hamilton Streets, the community square was part of the original plans for city founder William Allen's "Northampton Towne" in 1762. Commonly referred to as Center Square, it became the focal point of the community's central Business and Shopping District, as well as the focal point for civic activities and social life.

Two National Register of Historic Places buildings are on the north side of the square. The Soldier's and Sailors monument (1899) honoring American Civil War veterans from the 47th Regiment Pennsylvania Volunteers is located in the center of Center square. In 2013, the PPL Arena was opened which provides a venue for various professional sports teams, concerts and other civic activities.
