English: The Caryatid Gateway features two carved stone caryatids, one male and one female, each representing different aspects of Wednesbury history. The female figure represents Æthelflæd, daughter of King Alfred, who fortified Wednesbury against the Danes. The male figure represents a tube maker, Wednesbury being famous for the manufacture of tubes, the process having been patented in the nineteenth century by Cornelius Whitehouse. The tube reference is continued in the polished stainless steel inverted tubular arch 'carried' by the caryatids.
