Burns Waterway cuts the historic Calumet River from it's headwaters, creating the East and West branch of the Little Calumet River, with the midsection from Blue Island, Illinois to Lake Calumet becoming retaining the name Calumet River. The Calumet River has one of it's historic outlets dredge to Lake Michigan. The historic outlet in Miller Beach is now the end of the Grand Calumet.
