Ce tableau est mentionné pour la première fois en 1625 par l’érudit italien Cassiano dal Pozzo au château de Fontainebleau, comme une œuvre de Léonard de Vinci. La majorité des historiens suppose qu’il est entré dans les collections royales françaises antérieurement, probablement sous le règne de François Ier.
