English: Avalanche transceivers are a class of radio transceivers specialized to the purpose of finding people or equipment buried under snow. Other names in use are “avalanche beacon”; Tracker, Piep, or Arva (some popular brand names); and a variety of regional slang terms. Normally kept in transmit mode, the device emits a low-power pulsed signal. After an avalanche, it can be switched to receive mode and used to begin an immediate search for any missing transmitters using techniques similar to radio direction finding.
Français : Un appareil de recherche de victimes d'avalanche, aussi désigné par son acronyme ARVA ou DVA (Détecteur de Victimes d'Avalanches), est un appareil électronique émetteur d'un signal radio destiné à localiser son porteur si celui-ci est enfoui sous une avalanche de neige. ARVA est maintenant une marque déposée, d'où l'utilisation de DVA à privilégier.
