Josef Ebnöther was born in 1937 as a Swiss citizen in the town of Altstätten in the Rhine Valley of St. Gallen. His place of citizenship is Oberriet, also located in the Rhine Valley. After training as a typeface painter and at an arts and crafts school, he went to Paris to the Académie de la Grande Chaumière and, in 1964, to the École des Beaux-Arts there.

Josef Ebnöther developed his own artistic language of forms, signs and colors. He takes an independent position in painting. In the cover text of a book (see citation in the Wikipedia text), he is described as an "anarchic artistic antipode to the Zurich School of Concretists, which inexorably dominates Swiss art with a strict pictorial logic of geometrical forms."
