  • Frederic Archer (1889) "The American Reed Organ." in Method for American reed-organ, Category:New York: F. Schirmer, p. 1 "Until recent years the Piano Forte held undisputed supremacy as the household instrument; now, however, the extended recognition accorded the American Reed or Cabinet Organ in the home-circle elevates it to a position of almost equal importance."
  • Dr. Robert J. Allan, Ch. Phys. (2003–2004) "The Reed Organ" in The Free Reed Organ in England "Reed organs, for the sake of this study, are usually free reed organs powered by vacuum (suction), often refered to as “American organs” because most originated in the USA. They are also often refered to as “pump organs” on all continents. Ian Thompson refers to them as SROs (Suction Reed Organs). The story is that an employee of Debain invented this kind of instrument, was not able to produce it in France and therefore emigrated to seek his fortune. We note however that there are some pressure instruments which cannot be classified as harmoniums (such as certain models of Aeolian Orchestrelle and the Vocalion) and there are also combined suction/ pressure instruments which we have listed as reed organs. We thus reserve the name “harmonium” for the original French style pressure wind instrument and use the name “reed organ” for everything else."
  • David Bridgeman-Sutton (2007). French Harmonium. The Christchurch Town Hall organ. "The harmonium varies considerably from the American reed-organ. ... If this is compared with any of the American instruments the much simpler style of case is immediately evident. Another immediate clue is that the manual compass of 5 octaves runs from C to c - two octaves below and three octaves above middle c. (American organs have a compass from FFF.) ... Labels on the stop heads are usually (rather beautiful) ceramics, with lettering in block Roman: American organs employ Gothic script on celluloid labels."
