Allentown Chiefs

[edit]

In July 1957, the Syracuse Chiefs, an unaffiliated Eastern League team moved to Allentown. The Allentown Chiefs, as they were known, played their home games at Breadon Field in Whitehall Township for the balance of the season (27 Games).

Allentown Red Sox

[edit]

In 1958, the Chiefs were replaced in Allentown by a Boston Red Sox franchise, the Allentown Red Sox, locally known as the A-Sox. The team played in the Class AA Eastern League between 1958 and 1960. In December 1958, Max Hess, Jr., purchased a 50-acre tract of land north of the US 22 Thruway, with plans to build a Hess Brothers suburban store and shopping center. Along with the undeveloped farmland, it included the 18 acre the Breadon Field baseball stadium. Hess worked out a deal with the Red Sox to continue to operate the baseball franchise in the stadium.

After the 1960 season, the team was relocated due to a lack of attendance (average of 650 fans per game in 1960), the team moved to Johnstown, Pennsylvania on December 5, 1960,

It was the last minor league club in Allentown affiliated with Major League Baseball until 2009
