English: The Douglas A-1 Skyraider was designated AD with the U.S. Navy (and with it U.S. Marine Corps) until 18 September 1962 when, with the introduction of the Tri-Service aircraft designation system, all Skyraiders still in service were redesignated A-1. The models AD-1 to AD-3 were not in service anymore and therefore received no new designation. The AD-5 was redesignated A-1E, the AD-5Q EA-1F, the AD-5W EA-1E, the AD-5N was already retired.
During the Vietnam War, many retired Skyraiders were refurbished for the U.S. Air Force and the Vietnamese Air Force. AD-5/-5Q/-5W aircraft became "new" USAF A-1E attack aircraft, former AD-5N became A-1G, although there was no difference between the types. The A-1E versions kept the different EA-1E/F canopies.
