  • On a rectangular shield arced at top and base 2 3/8 inches (6.03 cm) in width and 3 1/8 inches (7.94 cm) in height overall, quartered gray and blue, a bottony cross 2 inches (5.08 cm) in width and 2 inches (5.08 cm) in height overall quartered red and white, and surmounted diagonally overall by a yellow bayonet (of the period of the War Between the States), the point in upper left, all within a 1/8 inch (.32 cm) white border.
  • COMBAT SERVICE IDENTIFICATION BADGE: A silver color metal and enamel device 2 inches (5.08 cm) in height consisting of a design similar to the shoulder sleeve insignia.

Symbolism

  1. The blue and white are Infantry colors.
  2. The red and white quartered bottony cross is taken from the shield of the coat of arms of Lord Baltimore and appears on the state flag and state seal of Maryland.
  3. The blue and gray represents the service of Maryland’s units in the 29th (“Blue and Gray”) Infantry Division in World War I and World War II.
  4. The bayonet represents the achievements of the Maryland Line during the War for Independence and the gallantry of the “Maryland 400” at the Battle of Long Island, August 1776, the first recorded use of the bayonet by American soldiers.

  1. The shoulder sleeve insignia was originally approved for the 58th Infantry Brigade on 1976-09-17.
  2. The insignia was rescinded on 1988-07-01, when the brigade was converted from a separate brigade to a divisional brigade.
  3. It was reinstated and redesignated for the 58th Infantry Brigade Combat Team with the description and symbolism updated on 2006-06-01.

  • A gold metal and enamel device 1 1/8 inches (2.86 cm) in height overall, consisting of two gold demi-fleurs-de-lis palewise, one pointing north and bearing at center a blue arrowhead, the other pointing south and bearing at center a blue bayonet point, the fleurs-de-lis from the center of a diagonal bar with rounded ends crossing from upper left to lower right and composed of six equal vertical segments alternating left to right of yellow and black, crossing behind in the opposite direction a similar bar composed of six equal vertical segments, alternating from left to right of red and green. Attached below is a semi-circular black scroll inscribed “MARYLAND 400” in gold.

Symbolism

  1. The unit’s World War I service in France is represented by the lower fleur-de-lis; the upper one denotes World War II European service with the arrowhead recognizing participation in an assault landing at Normandy.
  2. The red in the background refers to the Meritorious Unit Streamer awarded to the unit for European Theater Service in World War II, and together with the color green, signifies the award of the French Croix de Guerre with Palm for World War II service on the “Beaches of Normandy.”
  3. The yellow and black diagonal bar is a reference to the Brigade’s home state of Maryland.
  4. The motto captures the spirit of the original Maryland Line of General Washington’s Continentals, made up of former militia units from Maryland.
  5. At the Battle of Long Island, Colonel William Smallwood’s 400 Marylanders, fighting under Major Mordecai Gist, outnumbered 25 to 1, made six bayonet charges against British regulars in order to protect the retreat of Washington’s defeated force.
  6. If the Maryland Line failed and Washington’s army was captured, the American Revolution would have ended in defeat for the Americans.
  7. In the end, Washington made good his escape, at the cost of 256 of the Marylanders.
  8. To quote Thomas Field, the Marylanders bought “… an hour more precious than any other in the history of the nation.”

  2. It was redesignated for the 58th Infantry Brigade Combat Team and amended to add a motto and revise the symbolism on 2006-06-06.
