51 Astor Place, an office tower located between Astor Place and East 9th Street and between 3rd and 4th Avenues in the East Village neighborhood of Manhattan, New York City, was built in 2013 and was designed by Fumihiko Maki. It is a commercial building constructed on land leased from Cooper Union, and located across the street from the Cooper Union Foundation Building. A certain amount of the building was set aside for educational use, but Cooper Union turned down use of the space because of the high rental cost. Instead St. John's University will relocate its Manhattan campus there, and Cooper Union will use some of the classroom and office space. (Source: Building website and Press release)
