Category:1969 Leon Furniture Company Fire, Allentown, Pennsylvania
On the night of February 8th, 1969, one of the largest fires in Allentown history broke out in the Leon Furniture Store, 16-18 North Seventh Street.
This general alarm fire lasted all night, destroying the store, along with the adjacent Lafayette Radio Electronics store. The former Dime Savings building, at the time the home of a restaurant on the first floor and offices on the upper floors was saved in large part to an effective firewall between the structures. In 2013, when the Dime building was reconstructed as part of the PPL Center/Mariott Renaissance Hotel construction, extensive fire damage was discovered and was repaired as part of the rebuilding process.
