The torch relay for the 2012 Summer Olympics saw the Olympic flame carried first on an 8 day relay across Greece from Olympia (10 May) to Athens (17 May), then flown from Athens to Cornwall aboard The Firefly, and then conducted on a 70 day long relay from 19 May to 27 July across the United Kingdom and the Crown Dependencies (Jersey, Guernsey & the Isle of Man), plus a one day visit to Dublin in the Republic of Ireland. The final day saw the torch arrive at a pontoon in the River Thames near Tower Bridge, in readiness for its part in that evening's the opening ceremony - a trip by speedboat to the Olympic Stadium, to light the the cauldron.
