Hello, ZombiePowered!
Tip: Add categories to your files
Tip: Add categories to your files

Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").

Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.

Hi ZombiePowered, I removed the deletion notice from the image so the issue can be addressed. For the image to be hosted on Wikimedia Commons, the copyright holder must agree to license the image under a free license. The copyright holder is the photographer or, in a case of work for hire, probably the campaign. You need to find the person that owns the copyright and ask him/her to agree to a free license for the image. We choose the Creative Commons Attribution-Sharealike License because we consider it the best available tool for ensuring our encyclopedia can remain free for all to use, while providing credit to everyone who donates an image. You can read this license in full at: http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0/ This license expressly protects creators from being considered responsible for modifications made by others, while ensuring that creators are credited for their work. There is more information on our copyright policy at Commons:Licensing. As stated on that page, we also accept licensing of images under other free-content licenses, but the Creative Commons Attribution-Sharealike License 3.0 Unported License is the standard license for Wikipedia and the best option, in my opinion. To provide evidence of permission, please send an email with copy of a written permission to OTRS (at permissions-commons@wikimedia.org) - the best way is to have the copyright holder send the email and let him/her use the "Declaration of consent for all enquiries", which can be found here (of course with the link to the image, the license, and date and name filled in). Note: you reuploaded a smaller version of the image, which is not necessary, because images are automatically resized in their usage, but a smaller source image decreases the quality of the end result, so consider allowing the larger version to be used. If you have any questions, leave a message on my talk page or send me an email. Best regards Hekerui (talk) 21:07, 17 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Files you uploaded may be deleted

[edit]

The files listed below, which you uploaded, have been tagged OTRS pending for more than 30 days. This tag indicates that an email setting out permission to use the file was sent to the OTRS team. Unfortunately, we cannot find any record that such an email has been received, and accordingly the file remains without permission. Unless the OTRS team receives evidence that permission has been granted within 15 days of today's date, the file will be deleted. If you have not sent the permission, please send it to "permissions-commons@wikimedia.org" now. Please quote the file name in your email. If you have, please leave a message at the OTRS noticeboard, quoting the file name, so that a volunteer can follow this up. Alternatively, you can contact an OTRS volunteer directly. Please note that this message is being left by an automated bot, whose operator is not an OTRS volunteer, therefore please do not send this information to me, as it will not save your images from deletion. Thanks for your time! Please help translate this message! HersfoldOTRSBot(talk/opt out) 18:26, 29 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]
