Requests
[edit]m:VisualEditor/Newsletter/2019/October needs to be translated. Can you help me with that?
The newsletter contains a request from the mw:Editing team about the new mw:Talk pages project. They want examples of useful discussions. Could you please give an example, or ask people to share an example? Thanks, Whatamidoing (WMF) (talk) 17:43, 17 October 2019 (UTC)
- @Whatamidoing (WMF): I'm unfortunately really bad at translating. (If I write in Chinese I think in Chinese; if I write in English I think in English; there's no translation step). Maybe Liuxinyu970226 can help --Zhuyifei1999 (talk) 17:48, 17 October 2019 (UTC)
- Thanks. Do you have a favorite discussion to share? The link is in the newsletter. I think it's important for the team to get examples that aren't (just) from the English Wikipedia, so I'm asking a few people that I know are active on other wikis. Whatamidoing (WMF) (talk) 18:23, 17 October 2019 (UTC)
- @Whatamidoing (WMF): I don't have a favorite discussion in mind. I mean, a lot of discussions at, say COM:VP are constructive. However, there aren't some significant changes recently that I can think of that resulted from a "large" discussion. COM:VP/P has essentially replaced COM:RFC, though the quality of a lot of those VP/P are... IMO worse that that of the RFCs. --Zhuyifei1999 (talk) 19:59, 17 October 2019 (UTC)
- I'm too lazy to maintain newsletters' translations now, a good alternate opinion is @Stang: ^^ --Liuxinyu970226 (talk) 23:20, 17 October 2019 (UTC)
- It looks like User:Ruanlong and User:WhitePhosphorus have kindly translated almost half of it already. Whatamidoing (WMF) (talk) 21:13, 20 October 2019 (UTC)

- The API sandbox and help pages now show more clearly when API modules are marked as
internal
. API modules marked as internal were probably internal before. It was easier to miss. You should look for non-internal alternatives. [1]
Problems
- There is a translation tool we use on wikis with more than one language. For a few days it did not create pages for new languages when someone translated a page. The languages did not show in the language bar. This has been fixed. [2]
- The history and diffs can show wrong content. This is because of a cache problem. It will soon be fixed. [3]
Changes later this week
- The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 22 October. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 23 October. It will be on all wikis from 24 October (calendar).
- Reference Previews will be a beta feature on all Wikipedias and some Wikivoyages. It shows you a preview of the footnote when you hover over or click on the number. It has been a beta feature on German and Arabic Wikipedia since April.
Meetings
- You can join the technical advice meeting on IRC. During the meeting, volunteer developers can ask for advice. The meeting will be on 23 October. See how to join.

- It generates the diff differently than mediawiki; rather than a deletion of an empty line and addition of a comment, it thinks there is an addition of an old comment before the original empty line and a replace of the old comment by a new comment after original empty line. The diff generation from two wikitexts is done by the underlying difflib module; I don't know how to fix this. --Zhuyifei1999 (talk) 20:55, 22 October 2019 (UTC)

- You can post proposals for the Community Wishlist Survey. The survey decides what the Community Tech team will work on. You can post proposals until 11 November. You can vote on proposals from 20 November to 2 December. This year the wishlist will focus on Wikibooks, Wiktionary, Wikiquote, Wikisource, Wikiversity, Wikispecies, Wikivoyage and Wikinews. You can read more about the format for this year.
- Mobile users now have a specific design for their Watchlist. [4][5]
- You can share feedback and ideas on the Desktop Improvements project. The goal is to make the interface easier to use for readers and editors without removing any functionality. The Foundation's Readers Web team will work on this over the next two years.
- OOUI now allows using
px
(pixels) instead ofem
(em) for some specific cases. [6][7]
Changes later this week

Future changes
- There will be no software changes from 19 December to 2 January. The first MediaWiki version next year will come the week of 6 January. [8]
- Gadgets and user scripts can access variables about the current page in JavaScript. In 2015, this information was moved from global variables named
wg*
tomw.config
. The old global variables will be removed later this year. You can know more about it and tell the developers if you want to try this out on your wiki first.

Code issues in MediaWiki:Gadget-fastcci.css
[edit]Hi Zhuyifei1999, I am a bored bot (this is kind of a computer program) that is watching the recent changes and tapping buttons like I did now.
Curious about the reason? Possibly not but I will tell you anyway:
- You edited MediaWiki:Gadget-fastcci.css. Thank you for caring about Wikimedia Commons's css pages.
- Though, that change appears to introduce 1 new prettyCss issue — the page's status is now having warnings.
- To help you understanding where the issues are, I have aggregated a report here and now. If you have questions, don't hesitate to ask users experienced in css writing for help. But do not ask the bot's operators (chronically overwrought) unless you suspect an error of mine.

[edit]I created this topic only to inform you that sometimes the bot has some "indecision".
In the history of file:MP 722952 (4557822183).jpg you can see that the first time it fails to match the Flickr photo (size_not_found cc-by-sa-2.0) but running it a second time it says "passed cc-by-sa-2.0". --Arosio Stefano (talk) 09:54, 5 November 2019 (UTC)
- Yeah, that can happen. If any random non-critical things fail during the confirm-flickr-image-and-commons-image-are-the-same it becomes sizes_not_found --Zhuyifei1999 (talk) 14:53, 5 November 2019 (UTC)

I better go to sleep before I go completely gaga.Would you take a peek at my common.js? Maybe there's a bug in I didn't see. Java is not my strong suit. - I want to work on the required categories for names and organisms. Is it possible to generate this list or the lists should contain categories for all fields? ديفيد عادل وهبة خليل 2 (talk) 07:19, 7 November 2019 (UTC)
- I don't think I can deduce what the category should belong from the name of the category. --Zhuyifei1999 (talk) 07:59, 7 November 2019 (UTC)

HTPP 500 error in G2C
[edit]Dude, I am getting this HTPP 500 Internal Server Error response almost half of the time (maybe even more) when I try to upload files via Glam2Commons. Any idea why that is happening? Masum Reza📞 08:43, 4 November 2019 (UTC)
- Also why do I get the following response, "User 'None' does not have upload rights on site commons:commons"? Masum Reza📞 09:22, 4 November 2019 (UTC)
- The tool was created for GSoC 2017 by @Infobliss: . I don't remember much about the inner workings of the tool, but I can look into it. I'm not sure it was completely done and polished so this could be a a rabbit hole :) --Zhuyifei1999 (talk) 17:18, 4 November 2019 (UTC)
I see this trace in the logs:

I'm unfamiliar with Nationaal Archief API. @Basvb: Could you look into this? --Zhuyifei1999 (talk) 17:22, 4 November 2019 (UTC)
- Not just Nationaal Archief. Same thing is happening with Amsterdam Museum. Even worse. Searching for keywords returns results with no thumbnails! And same 500 Internal Server Error. Maybe I will apply for GWToolSet rights. Any idea who I can ask on beta cluster? Masum Reza📞 02:23, 5 November 2019 (UTC)
- You mean you want GWToolset rights on https://commons.wikimedia.beta.wmflabs.org ? I can assign you that. What is your username? --Zhuyifei1999 (talk) 02:56, 5 November 2019 (UTC)
- Yes, per instructions, I am supposed to test it out and make example uploads on the beta cluster. My username is the same there. It's "Masumrezarock100". Masum Reza📞 03:03, 5 November 2019 (UTC)

- A question: I tried to use GWT and I see it asks for a xml metadata file. Where I can get those metadata files? Masum Reza📞 04:56, 7 November 2019 (UTC)
- I have no idea. I never used GWT nor investigated how it works. --Zhuyifei1999 (talk) 04:58, 7 November 2019 (UTC)
- (talk page stalker) Masumrezarock You need XML from the source organization (Museum/Art gallery etc). For the source, title, author and License etc. -- Eatcha (talk) 05:05, 7 November 2019 (UTC)
- Oh I see. I am too lazy to contact them. So I won't be needing this right. I thought it would be like Glam2Commons. @Zhuyifei1999 please remove my GWToolSet right. Thanks. Masum Reza📞 05:11, 7 November 2019 (UTC)

@Zhuyifei1999 Could you make me a sysop on beta commons or test commons? Either one is fine. I will use it to test my scripts that requires advanced permissions. Masum Reza📞 15:50, 8 November 2019 (UTC)

Hi, only reading this now. About the error in the tool: I see Nationaal Archief changed their website, probably they changed the structure of the metadata. As for the tool, I think it is unlikely this will be fixed, I currently am too far out of it and believe it's quite broken, if I recall correctly somebody has also uploaded large parts of the Nationaal Archief collections so that makes it less useful for this specific archive.
