Our first steps tour and our FAQ will help you a lot after registration. They explain how to customize the interface (for example the language), how to upload files and our basic licensing policy. You don't need technical skills in order to contribute here. Be bold contributing here and assume good faith for the intentions of others. This is a wiki—it is really easy. More information is available at the community portal. You may ask questions at the help desk, village pump or on IRC channel #wikimedia-commons (direct access). You can also contact an administrator on their talk page. If you have a specific copyright question, ask at Commons talk:Licensing. |

Hello Yoshi Canopus!
Thank you for providing images to Wikimedia Commons. Please keep in mind that images uploaded to Commons should be useful to all users of Wikimedia projects. This is possible only if the images can be found by other people.
To allow others to find the images you uploaded here, the images should be in some place that can be found by navigating the category structure. This means that you should put the images into appropriate topic pages, categories, optionally galleries, or both of them (see Commons:Categories). To find good categories for your images, the CommonSense tool may help.
You can find a convenient overview of your uploaded files in this gallery.
The important point is that the images should be placed in the general structure somewhere. There are a large number of completely unsorted images on Commons right now. If you would like to help to place some of those images where they can be found, please do!
Thank you. BotMultichillT (talk) 21:31, 27 November 2008 (UTC)

No idea what I am supposed to do!
[edit]I have read, re-read, tried, re-tried, and have no idea what I am supposed to do! That is, alas!, I, as forever a novice Wiki user, have no idea how to put each picture file into the appropriate category (IBM etc.)... Yoshi Canopus (talk) 2008.12.30.
Actions taken on the uncategorized images
[edit]So, I finally vaguely undestood how to do it, and edited each of the image file pages, deleting the uncategorized tag and adding the Category tag. Yoshi Canopus (talk) 05:12, 26 January 2009 (UTC)
Actions taken on the uncategorized images
[edit]I do not know why during each photo upload the category information is not properly handled (I usually make sure to input the Category information), but today I updated the uncategiried images, up to "Zhuanghe Bus Station, China.jpg". Yoshi Canopus (talk) 10:58, 16 July 2011 (UTC)

Thanks for uploading File:WangZhaojun-OnHorseback.jpg. This media is missing permission information. A source is given, but there is no proof that the author or copyright holder agreed to license the file under the given license. Please provide a link to an appropriate webpage with license information, or ask the author or copyright holder to send an email with copy of a written permission to VRT (permissions-commons@wikimedia.org). You may still be required to go through this procedure even if you are the author yourself; please see Commons:But it's my own work! for more details. After you emailed permission, you may replace the {{No permission since}} tag with {{subst:PP}} on file description page. Alternatively, you may click on "Challenge speedy deletion" below the tag if you wish to provide an argument why evidence of permission is not necessary in this case.
Please see this page for more information on how to confirm permission, or if you would like to understand why we ask for permission when uploading work that is not your own, or work which has been previously published (regardless of whether it is your own). The file probably has been deleted. If you sent a permission, try to send it again after 14 days. Do not re-upload. When the VRT-member processes your mail, the file can be undeleted. Additionally you can request undeletion here, providing a link to the File-page on Commons where it was uploaded ([[:File:WangZhaojun-OnHorseback.jpg]] ) and the above demanded information in your request. |

[edit]This media may be deleted. |
A file that you have uploaded to Wikimedia Commons, File:China-Liaoning-Dalian-LiaoningNormalUniv1.jpg, is missing information about where it comes from or who created it, which is needed to verify its copyright status. Please edit the file description and add the missing information, or the file may be deleted.
If you created the content yourself, enter If someone else created the content, or if it is based on someone else's work, the source should be the address to the web page where you found it, the name and ISBN of the book you scanned it from, or similar. You should also name the author, provide verifiable information to show that the content is in the public domain or has been published under a free license by its author, and add an appropriate template identifying the public domain or licensing status, if you have not already done so. Warning: Wikimedia Commons takes copyright violations very seriously and persistent violators will be blocked from editing. File:IBM-Building-Yamato-facility2.jpg has been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether it should be kept or not. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry.
If you created this file, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. Image:DingGuangxun.jpg has been marked as a possible copyright violation. Wikimedia Commons only accepts free content—that is, images and other media files that can be used by anyone, for any purpose. Traditional copyright law does not grant these freedoms, and unless noted otherwise, everything you find on the web is copyrighted and not permitted here. For details on what is acceptable, please read Commons:Licensing. You may also find Commons:Copyright rules useful, or you can ask questions about Commons policies at the Commons:Help desk. If you are the copyright holder and the creator of the file, please read Commons:But it's my own work! for tips on how to provide evidence of that.
The file you added has been deleted. If you have written permission from the copyright holder, please have them send us a free license release via COM:VRT. If you believe that the deletion was not in accordance with policy, you may request undeletion. (It is not necessary to request undeletion if using VRT; the file will be automatically restored at the conclusion of the process.) Warning: Wikimedia Commons takes copyright violations very seriously and persistent violators will be blocked from editing.

Wikimedia's copyright policy baffles me!
[edit]Yes, (sigh!), after having contributed more than 400 mostly new articles to Wikipedia and 120 photos to Wikimedia for the past four year, Wikimedia's copyright policy still baffles me and makes me to feel like a novice user! 123.90.206.120 01:42, 21 July 2011 (UTC)

[edit]I guess this was a mistake. ;-) I restored it for you by moving the page. Kind regards, Trijnstel (talk) 13:27, 29 January 2012 (UTC)
- I do not understand what mistake I have made, but thanks for correcting it. Yoshi Canopus (talk) 09:59, 1 February 2012 (UTC)
I just deleted this page. Since you already have a user page, I'm not sure what you were trying to do. Please remember that on Commons, "User" must be in English only -- "Utilisateur" does not work.
Within very broad limits, you can create anything you would like as a subpage of your user page, so that User:Yoshi Canopus/Utilisateur:Yoshi Canopus would be OK, although I don't see why you would want it. If you have questions, you may ask them at the Village Pump in any of 42 languages or on my talk page. I will also watch for questions here on your talk page for at least a week. Jim . . . . Jameslwoodward (talk to me) 23:45, 14 February 2012 (UTC)
- Jim, I do not know how to make a subpage. As you can see in my Wikipedia user page, I have been storing the backup of my user page in the user pages of other langauges every quarter, because I tend to make mistakes. Yoshi Canopus (talk) 23:56, 14 February 2012 (UTC)
- Ah. I understand. First, since the complete save-by-save history of every page on every project is always available by clicking on the "View history" tab at the top, you do not need to store backups. But, if you wish, I see no rule against it. You create a subpage the same way you create every other page -- just type the name in the search box, click on "search" and click then on "Create the page..." when the search comes up empty. A subpage begins with:
- "User:Yoshi Canopus/"
- so that
- "User:Yoshi Canopus/Backup"
- is OK. Many of us have one or two sandbox pages for experimenting or working on projects before they are ready for general viewing. This would be
- "User:Yoshi Canopus/Sandbox"
- You can also create archives of pages. We usually use this for archiving talk pages when they get too long. This would be
- "User talk:Yoshi Canopus/Archive 1"
- and so forth.
- Jim . . . . Jameslwoodward (talk to me) 00:06, 17 February 2012 (UTC)
- Thanks, Jim. I'll try experimenting subpages soon. By the way, I now would like to change the user name to Yoshi Mikami, which I usually use in English, as my real name is Yoshihiko Mikami. I don't know if I can do this now in bothe Wikipedia and Wikimedia. Yoshi Canopus (talk) 21:20, 20 February 2012 (UTC)

Copyright status: File:IBM-Yamato-Facility2.jpg
[edit]This media may be deleted. |
Thanks for uploading File:IBM-Yamato-Facility2.jpg. I notice that the file page either doesn't contain enough information about the license or it contains contradictory information about the license, so the copyright status is unclear.
If you created this file yourself, then you must provide a valid copyright tag. For example, you can tag it with {{self|GFDL|cc-by-sa-all}} to release it under the multi-license GFDL plus Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike All-version license or you can tag it with {{PD-self}} to release it into the public domain. (See Commons:Copyright tags for the full list of license tags that you can use.) If you did not create the file yourself or if it is a derivative of another work that is possibly subject to copyright protection, then you must specify where you found it (e.g. usually a link to the web page where you got it), you must provide proof that it has a license that is acceptable for Commons (e.g. usually a link to the terms of use for content from that page), and you must add an appropriate license tag. If you did not create the file yourself and the specific source and license information is not available on the web, you must obtain permission through the VRT system and follow the procedure described there. Note that any unsourced or improperly licensed files will be deleted one week after they have been marked as lacking proper information, as described in criteria for deletion. If you have uploaded other files, please confirm that you have provided the proper information for those files, too. If you have any questions about licenses please ask at Commons:Village pump/Copyright or see our help pages. Thank you. |

Thanks for your contribution to introduce the northeastern China to the world!
[edit]Hello, Mr. Yoshi I'm a native residence of en:Tieling, a quite anonymous city in the northeastern area. I just graduated from the Tieling High School as a teenager in June. I thought that my English is not that bad so I wish I can let the world know more about my hometown by writing articles on Wikipedia. (partly because the Chinese version Wikipedia is blocked in Mainland China) I read the articles thoroughly about Tieling before my first edit. During this process, I found that you have posted some of the most amazing photos of my hometown! So a huge thank for your contribution to the Wikipedia! — Preceding unsigned comment added by Tomskyhaha (talk • contribs) 14:08, 2 July 2018 (UTC)

Wikimedia Commons does not accept derivative works of non-free works such as File:Common English Bible.jpg. It only accepts free content, which is images and other media files that can be used by anyone, for any purpose. Reproductions of copyrighted works are also subject to the same copyright, and therefore this file must unfortunately be considered non-free. For more information, please read Commons:Derivative works and Commons:Freedom of panorama. You can ask questions about Commons policies in Commons:Help desk.
The file you added has been deleted. If you believe that this file was not a derivative work of a non-free work, you may request undeletion.

File:Fugaku fuketsu - Plaque.jpg has been marked as a possible copyright violation.
(It is not necessary to request undeletion if using VRT; the file will be automatically restored at the conclusion of the process.)

Source of derivative work is not properly indicated: File:中野区立中央中学校の校歌碑.jpg
[edit]This file may be deleted. |
A file that you have uploaded to Wikimedia Commons, File:中野区立中央中学校の校歌碑.jpg, is a derivative work, containing an "image within an image". Examples of such works would include a photograph of a sculpture, a scan of a magazine cover, or a map that has been altered from the original. In each of these cases, the rights of the creator of the original must be considered, as well as those of the creator of the derivative work.
While the description page states who made this derivative work, it currently doesn't specify who created the original work, so the overall copyright status is unclear. If you did not create the original work depicted in this image, you will need to specify the owner of the copyright. Please edit the file description and add the missing information, or the file may be deleted. If you created the original content yourself, enter this information as the source. If someone else created the content, the source should be the address to the web page where you found it, the name and ISBN of the book you scanned it from, or similar. You should also name the author, provide verifiable information to show that the content is in the public domain or has been published under a free license by its author, and add an appropriate template identifying the public domain or licensing status, if you have not already done so. Please add the required information for this and other files you have uploaded before adding more files. If you need assistance, please ask at the help desk. Thank you! |
