Tip: Add categories to your files

Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

[[Category:Category name]]

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

[[Category:Astronomical diagrams]]

[[Category:Comets]]

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").

Taking a photo of a painting doesn't really give you the rights or copyrights to the work, While taking a photo is seen as creative works it is seen taking a photo of an art work or even a photograph is not seen as creative.

If you have permission from the artist to freely use the image under a free license then please send an email to the OTRS team (See COM:OTRS on how to do this). You also claim that this art work is 100 years old (I do doubt this but I'm not really an art person), if you can show any evidence to prove that this art work is infact 100 years old and that the copyright/freedom of panorama in the country of origin allows the art work to be in the public domain after 50 years or more (depends on the country as some have restrictions for 50 and some for longer).

I will not be here on Commons for the next few days since I'll be working at an Archive repository and tomorrow and Saturday (Australian time) I'll be away so my replies will be delayed. Bidgee (talk) 21:18, 25 November 2009 (UTC)

Hi there, thank you for bringing this to my attention. If the work is in fact as old as you say, then it would be in the public domain. If you could provide a link to another source confirming that the above is correct, I am sure that Bidgee will be more than happy to restore the file in question thank you. Your account will be renamed

Hello,

The developer team at Wikimedia is making some changes to how accounts work, as part of our on-going efforts to provide new and better tools for our users like cross-wiki notifications. These changes will mean you have the same account name everywhere. This will let us give you new features that will help you edit and discuss better, and allow more flexible user permissions for tools. One of the side-effects of this is that user accounts will now have to be unique across all 900 Wikimedia wikis. See the announcement for more information.

Unfortunately, your account clashes with another account also called Wikidajlo57. To make sure that both of you can use all Wikimedia projects in future, we have reserved the name Wikidajlo57~commonswiki that only you will have. If you like it, you don't have to do anything. If you do not like it, you can pick out a different name.

Your account will still work as before, and you will be credited for all your edits made so far, but you will have to use the new account name when you log in.
