Our first steps help file and our FAQ will help you a lot after registration. They explain how to customize the interface (for example the language), how to upload files and our basic licensing policy. You don't need technical skills in order to contribute here. Be bold contributing here and assume good faith for the intentions of others. This is a wiki - it is really easy. More information is available at the Community Portal. You may ask questions at the Help desk, Village Pump or on IRC channel #wikimedia-commons. You can also contact an administrator on their talk page. Re: Archiving
[edit]Ya, you think?! :) --pfctdayelise (说什么?) 16:16, 12 October 2006 (UTC)
- Yes, please! I would love some archiving.
- How do the instructions work? It also needs to be set up for COM:VP, COM:HD and (with special care) COM:DR. Possibly also other-language village pumps, and maybe commons talk:licensing. But definitely the first two are good to go ASAP. pfctdayelise (说什么?) 09:39, 21 October 2006 (UTC)
- Is the category necessary? :/ Won't whatlinkshere do the same thing?
- BTW Werdnabot's howto is still blank. pfctdayelise (说什么?) 03:15, 22 October 2006 (UTC)
- Not blank anymore :-) Siebrand 15:35, 4 November 2006 (UTC)
Congratulations. It has bot flag now. --EugeneZelenko 14:35, 19 October 2006 (UTC)
More to archive
[edit]Please archive COM:AN and the various subpages.
What are the parameters of use? It would be good to get the bot on COM:DEL, but it might be a bit tricky. pfctdayelise (说什么?) 00:12, 20 November 2006 (UTC)
Archiving village pump
[edit]Hi, I noticed the village pump hasn't been archived in a long time and is up to 305kb. Could you get Werdnabot to work its magic? Thanks. the wub "?!" 23:25, 10 January 2007 (UTC)
- Same request :-) Some sections are really old ones. --EugeneZelenko 15:27, 23 January 2007 (UTC)
- Ya, what's going on? --pfctdayelise (说什么?) 04:36, 24 January 2007 (UTC)
Werdnabot/Archiver
[edit]Hello,
I was thinking of using your Werdnabot/Archiver on french wikipedia, how can I make it work there? Micheletb 14:32, 14 January 2007 (UTC)
Bug!
[edit]I've found a bug in werdanabot see diff. when chcecking for new sections you seem to only consider the first character and not the last as wiki parser e.g.:
some text... => some text... (no "=" at the end of line)
Best wishes, Nux (talk··dyskusja) 23:05, 27 January 2007 (UTC).

Another bug?
[edit]Hi, please have a look at Commons talk:Photography critiques where the discussion on my photo Stadhuis Antwerpen disappeared from Commons:Photography critiques without appearing on Commons:Photography critiques/February 2007. There were multiple properly signed comments inside this section.--Klaus with K 21:48, 22 March 2007 (UTC)
Where did User:Werdnabot go?
[edit]No user page is getting really full! :-)
Please let me know if you want to outsource the bot. I'd be happy to run it on toolserver with User:SieBot. Siebrand 14:42, 9 May 2007 (UTC)
- Werdna hasn't been online lately. We're discussing WerdnaBot at Commons:Bots/Requests#Archival. We miss it... :-( maybe it would be most efficient if you used SieBot for it since it is already set to go -- but I'm not sure that the bugs have been fixed.

- Please make the bot work again! --ALE! ¿…? 21:15, 5 June 2007 (UTC)
Wikimania presentations
[edit]Thanks for uploading presentation videos from Wikimania! This is a great step forward. Here are some problems:
- The very long filename File:2009082611 46-Einar Spetz-A story of love and hate How teachers a tupper secondary schools in Sweden use Wikipedia and what they think of the free encyclopedia.ogg is practically useless, and increases the risk of spelling errors ("a tupper" should be at upper). The filename should probably be "Wikimania 2009 Einar Spetz.ogg" and if the same speaker gave more than one presentation, just add one word (e.g. "schools") to the filename.
- For this 20 minute video, playback (using the Java applet) ends after about one minute. (Yes, I realize this could depend on my Java setup.)
- With vlc (under Linux) I can play the entire video, but the length is reported as 56:54 (56 minutes 54 seconds). At the beginning the timestamp jumps to 2:17, and at the end the timestamp stands at 23:02. Sound is silent until timestamp 5:03 or 2 minutes and 46 seconds into the video. The noise at 5:01 indicates the microphone was connected then. Perhaps a text should be added at the beginning, explaining that the video is silent for the first 2 minutes 46 secoonds.

Tip: Categorizing images
[edit]
Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.
Here's how:
1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:
2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".
When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").
Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.CategorizationBot (talk) 19:12, 10 August 2010 (UTC)

Thanks for uploading File:200908261510-Erik Moller-Scaling Up Can Wikimedia Become A 300 Million People.ogv. I notice that the file page either doesn't contain enough information about the license or it contains contradictory information about the license, so the copyright status is unclear.
If you created this file yourself, then you must provide a valid copyright tag. For example, you can tag it with GFDL to release it under the multi-license GFDL plus Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike All-version license or you can tag it with PD-self to release it into the public domain. (See Commons:Copyright tags for the full list of license tags that you can use.) If you did not create the file yourself or if it is a derivative of another work that is possibly subject to copyright protection, then you must specify where you found it (e.g. usually a link to the web page where you got it), you must provide proof that it has a license that is acceptable for Commons (e.g. usually a link to the terms of use for content from that page), and you must add an appropriate license tag. If you did not create the file yourself and the specific source and license information is not available on the web, you must obtain permission through the VRT system and follow the procedure described there. Note that any unsourced or improperly licensed files will be deleted one week after they have been marked as lacking proper information, as described in criteria for deletion. If you have uploaded other files, please confirm that you have provided the proper information for those files, too. If you have any questions about licenses please ask at Commons:Village pump/Copyright or see our help pages. Thank you. |
