Re. Category Changes
[edit]Hi! Categories on the Commons have a tree-like structure. Generally speaking, if an image is in a category further down the tree, it is not necessary to put it in any of the parent categories. Thanks, —JeremyA 02:22, 18 October 2006 (UTC)
Re: Size of images
[edit]Hi! I think that the sizes of the images that you have uploaded so far have been fine. Many users of the commons like to encourage uploads at as high a resolution as possible. For the most part, I have resized my own images so that the largest dimension is 1024 pixels before uploading them, but I have been uploading larger images more recently. —JeremyA 01:52, 1 November 2006 (UTC)
Re: Location Maps of Scotland
[edit]Hi there, to move the black dot just download the Hr image to your computer and open it with an image editing program. Then you can either "select" the area of the black dot and drag it to the location you want or just erase the dot and place a new one where you need it. Then just save with a suitable name, upload and add it to the location map category. I don't know what image editing program you are using but The GIMP is a nice free one which can do most thinks (windows installer here) - the additional benefit of using the gimp is that you can download the xcf map which will open with the dot preselected and ready to move to where you need it. I don't know your level of skill so feel free to ask if you have any problems with the process, SFC9394 21:42, 3 December 2006 (UTC)
user page
[edit]Hiho, just a small hint regarding your Commons user page: Maybe you want to make links like the following?
Eachuisge, Kelpie;
Amhuinnsuidhe Castle has no article yet, but a usable image here on Commons ;-)
You can make readable interwiki links easily with the syntax Kelpie
(note the colon at the beginning).
… I first wondered what Eachuisge could be, but found the nice article about it on de.wikipedia then :-) --Überraschungsbilder 19:00, 9 December 2006 (UTC)
Kitten
[edit]Hiho, you can easily look this up by typing the file name at Special:Log, see here (note: this is only possible for uploads after December 2005; before that, there was another kind of log). The reason for deletion obviously was that the author does not allow commercial use, so the image has to be regarded as 'unfree'. I hope you'll find another image to replace the deleted one with. Alternatively one could ask the author (see [8]) personally, if he would like to release this specific image under a free license – one has to find the image on his website first to ask him ... and I don't have a clue what the deleted photo looks like :-/ --Überraschungsbilder 01:17, 25 January 2007 (UTC)

Image Tagging Image:N18_with_drascombe.jpg
[edit]
Thanks for uploading Image:N18_with_drascombe.jpg. I notice the image page currently doesn't specify who created the content, so the copyright status is unclear. If you have not created this media yourself then you need to argue that we have the right to use the media on Wikimedia Commons (see copyright tagging below). If you have not created the media yourself then you should also specify where you found it, i.e., in most cases link to the website where you got it, and the terms of use for content from that page. If the content is a derivative of a copyrighted work, you need to supply the names and a licence of the original authors as well.
If the media also doesn't have a copyright tag, then you must also add one. If you created/took the picture, audio, or video then you can use cc-by-sa-2.5 to release it under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike license or PD-self to release it into the public domain. See Commons:Copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.
Note that any unsourced and untagged images will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have uploaded other media, please check that you have specified their source and copyright tagged them, too. You can find all your uploads using the Gallery tool. Thank you. - Thank-you for noticing the problem. I believe I have fixed it, and here are the relevant facts as I understand them. The photograph was taken by the owner of the boat on the right and I have his permission to use the image on Commons (and indeed he has seen it there). The individual concerned is not a professional photographer and doesn't have a website. It is in effect a holiday snap. If you think anything else needs to be done please let me know. W. L. Good one - I have already placed it on en:Soay, St Kilda. Many thanks. W. L. Tarbert 20:58, 2 September 2007 (UTC)

There seems to be a problem regarding the description and/or licensing of this particular file. Please remember that all uploads require source, author and license information. Could you please resolve these problems, which are described on the page linked in above? You can edit the description page and change the text. Uploading a new version of the file does not change the description of the file. Thank you. Siebrand 11:32, 28 October 2007 (UTC)

Tip: Categorizing images
[edit]
Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.
Here's how:
1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:
2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".
When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").
Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.BotMultichillT 06:19, 27 July 2009 (UTC)

Request for Comment on Divisions of Scotland
[edit]Please comment here. Rodhullandemu (talk) 19:10, 26 August 2013 (UTC)
Rum, Scotland has been listed at Commons:Categories for discussion so that the community can discuss ways in which it should be changed. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry. If you created this category, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for discussion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it. If the category is up for deletion because it has been superseded, consider the notion that although the category may be deleted, your hard work (which we all greatly appreciate) lives on in the new category. In all cases, please do not take the category discussion personally. It is never intended as such. Thank you! |
