Hello, Vunz!
Tip: Add categories to your files
Tip: Add categories to your files

Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

[[Category:Category name]]

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

[[Category:Astronomical diagrams]]
[[Category:Comets]]

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").

Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.

Request for file

[edit]

Could you please help me out with one of the images as I'm not good with graphics? I'm looking for something with and combined, but I haven't found it.

I'm looking for a cargo-only terminal where both the track and the terminal are abandoned on the right side (light red). I think it should be File:BSicon vDST-xDST.svg

Thanks in advance!!

Baldwin040 13:39, 2 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I'll get on to it ;-) Vunz (talk) 22:45, 2 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for fast reply! Btw, for some reason your last line (the reply) did not show on this page and I was about to copy-paste my question to Wikipedia talk:Route diagram template/Catalog of pictograms, but when I went to editing mode to copy the source of my comment, boom, your reply appeared on the bottom. I'm trying to make it visible by adding this line with whole-page-edit...let's see. Baldwin040 10:35, 3 July 2009 (UTC) ps: Thanks again![reply]
Yep, the last lines shows now. Might have been your smilie on the end, not sure. Btw, sorry I don't have commons username, only on wiki side, so I had to edit my name in... Baldwin040 10:39, 3 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]
It's there. Kind regards Vunz (talk) 11:06, 3 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Awesome!! That was fast, 10 points to you Vunz!!

Request for rail icon: evLUECKE

[edit]

Could you please help me to get couple more of those rail icons?

It's there, you're welcome. Vunz (talk) 13:34, 21 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]
  • Also I'm looking for a right hand turn after a , placed on top of that station icon. I could use a (v-STR+l), but it starts the turn from the wrong side of a double track. So it should be like , except the lighter/closed track lines erased out. Not sure what it should be named at..?
I should call vSTR+l-, but I'm not sure. This is the result:

Btw, is there a more public place to request rail icons, other than ask someone directly? I hate to bother a single user with such issues, which happened to be you in this case...

I don't know where to be honest, but I don't mind you asking me, I see it as a challenge :-). Vunz (talk) 13:34, 21 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks again, Baldwin040 10:29, 21 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Sweet! Great job and a record time, thanks... ...I'll bother you again some day! 22:42, 21 July 2009 Baldwin040
There's a little problem with the (vSTR+l-). The bottom part of the icon does not match with a left sided track, for example with the -icon. I'm already using it in wikipedia, so don't delete it, just update if you could fix it a bit. You'll see what I mean if you place those two icons on top of each other. You can also look at http://fi.wikipedia.org/wiki/Malline:Humppila-Forssa (must click the linked word saying "Näytä" to open the routemap). They're the first two rows on the map.
The thing is that in most rail icons for parallel railways the left line is centered on x-position 130 (of 500) and the right one on x-position 370. Now there are also half width icons (all starting with 'd') which have a width of 250 where the x-position of the line is centered on 125, resulting in a mismatch when connected to parallel railway icons of normal width. In this case the icon for the station is adjusted to half width icons. There is however still no consensus about this issue. I'll try to push solving this. Vunz (talk) 15:51, 22 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]
And if you're working with that vSTR+l- -file, could you mirror it to be a left hand curve (the bottom matching with a right sided track) and upload that too. Looks like I'm going to need thatone on my next project. Not sure which name it should be, somehow that naming does not make much sence. Thanks! Baldwin040 10:56, 22 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]
That would be:
Ok, I see what you mean with the icon width/lining issue. It's not a problem for me, but someone picky will find it out sooner or later... Thanks much for your contribution and you should hear back from me eventually with more requests! Baldwin040 9:59, 23 July 2009 (UTC)

KRWl.svg

[edit]

I had long been off and returned recently. We users in JAWP would like to know how should counterparting icons of KRWs, such as File:BSicon 5101.svg and File:BSicon 5102.svg be named. We know KRWl , KRWrg File:BSicon KRWrg.svg had been created by NL user, but no etymological explanations have been found. Creating rotated or mirrored icons are never hard works for us, but naming is quite difficult with consistencies to original language. We are using KRW icons ja:Image:BSicon KRWrg.svg in several pages and we want to use File:BSicon 5101.svg and alike. Thx. Maxima m (talk) 02:40, 7 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

File:BSicon 5101.svg would be called KRW_l in my opinion. File:BSicon 5102.svg would be called KRW_r+r in the same naming convention. I have created them:

rl vs. lr

[edit]

Hi Vunz,

you're uploading your new icons using order "rl" when uploading icons. Although is definitely no rule to do it this way or the other way round I suggest to use "lr" for two reasons. First is that l comes first in alphabet, second is all icons I uploaded so far (BS2, ABZ, etc.) use "lr" (just because of the alphabet). D'accord? Groetjes axpdeHello! 14:10, 28 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Pas de problème. I had no specific reason to do this apart from when reading from left to right right comes first in the rail icons due to the downward direction. I'll take it into account! Vunz (talk) 06:31, 30 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Ok, have fun :) axpdeHello! 17:46, 30 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]
And it has been suggested that a lot of your files are renamed (Category:Media_requiring_renaming) I will move them now unless you protest :-) That is easyer that upload a new version on top of the old one. --MGA73 (talk) 08:16, 3 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]
No problem! I was aware of this. Vunz (talk) 08:27, 3 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

ekABZq+l et al.

[edit]

Hi Vunz,

just came across you new icon File:BSicon ekABZq+l.svg and at first sight I was surprised at the direction of the branching track. Usually "+l" says from the left but my first impression was a branching track to the right (as in File:BSicon kABZgr.svg, both tracks "end" in the same corner ...). Darn 'k'-type icons! Btw. do you take care of all those obsolete redirects that are created with each "rename"? Groetjes axpdeHello! 09:14, 14 December 2009 (UTC),[reply]

Well, I chose this way since the branching track is from the left when viewed from the position of the main (vertical) track. Besides that now you can make a combination of ABZq+l, KRZ+l and ABZq+l, makes it pretty straightforward ;-). I'll take care of the obsolete redirects! Vunz (talk) 16:20, 14 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Your names are well chosen, no question, just compare ABZq+l and kABZq+l ...
And thanks for cleaning up ;-) axpdeHello! 10:18, 15 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

File:BSicon_vSTRrf-KRZu.svg

[edit]

Hello! Based on your (vSTRr-KRZu) I made File:BSicon muSTRrf-KRZu.svg (muSTRrf-KRZu: main line blue) and File:BSicon mSTRrf-KRZu.svg (mSTRrf-KRZu: both lines blue), by editing the SVG source in a text editor. As you can see, it didn't work out to well. What did I did wrong? Can you help? Tuvalkin (talk) 10:40, 16 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

There's more about those icons than just the wrong outfit. The names are chosen very badly!
  1. parallel icons are indicated by "v"
  2. mixed icons are indicated by "m", main line light rail by "um" (not "mu")
  3. light rail icons are indicated by "u" (not "m", see above)
The names of parallel railway icons are a real mess, please use consistent names! axpdeHello! 14:04, 16 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Renaming and remaking those icons is my next project. I'd like to talk the options over with you.
As for the icon above, I'll have a look at it. Vunz (talk) 15:08, 16 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Sorry about the names, I was not sure how to combine "m" and "v"; I'll try to do it better next time. As for the SVG source, it was very hard to edit in text, and I suppose it should be.Tuvalkin (talk) 16:49, 16 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Haven't thought about parallel icons to much yet, not sure too whether "mv" or "vm" is more sensible, tending to "mv". The svg-source is only hard to code, if the icon wasn't created by hand. Look at those icons made by Vunz or myself, the source should be easily understandable! axpdeHello! 00:08, 18 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]
