Our first steps tour and our frequently asked questions will help you a lot after registration. They explain how to customize the interface (for example the language), how to upload files and our basic licensing policy (Wikimedia Commons only accepts free content).

You don't need technical skills in order to contribute here. Be bold when contributing and assume good faith when interacting with others. This is a wiki.

Getting help

More information is available at the community portal. You may ask questions at the help desk, village pump or on IRC channel #wikimedia-commons (webchat). You can also contact an administrator on their talk page. If you have a specific copyright question, ask at the copyright village pump.

Goodies, tips, and tricks

Put Babel boxes on your user page so others know what languages you can speak and indicate your graphic abilities.
You can find the files you have uploaded in your Uploads.
Please sign your name on Talk pages by typing ~~~~.
To link to an image page without embedding the image, type: [[:File:Foo.jpg]], which produces: File:Foo.jpg.
You may enable gadgets (custom features) for your account.
There are several tools to upload files.
Have you edited Wikipedia before? This guide might be useful.

Made a mistake?

Do you want to have a file renamed or moved? Use the move link and wait for an authorized user to rename it.
Do you want to have your recently uploaded picture removed? Tag it as {{speedy|reason here}}. For more information read the deletion guidelines.

No permission

So far, all of the files you have uploaded have been created by other people. You have not provided any evidence that you have permission to license them for use on Commons. Without such permission, they will all be deleted.

This just wastes your time and time of other Commons editors and Administrators. Please stop. If you continue, you may be blocked from editing on Commons.

Also, consider carefully whether these files violate Commons policy on advertising and promotion. Even if you do get permission to use them, they may be deleted.

If you have questions, you may ask them at the Village Pump in any of 42 languages or on my talk page. I will also watch for questions here on your talk page for at least a week.

I do not read German, but with the help of Google translate, I have looked at the e-mail. The message is not entirely clear even in German -- it appears to contain a second e-mail and it is hard to separate the two. I see the corporate name in the middle, but I, even with the help of Google, cannot see if that is a signature. There are several problems:

The first is that the license is CC-BY-NC. Commons does not accept NC licenses.

The second, much larger problem, is that there is no evidence in the e-mail or in the files that you have any right to the images. Some of them are drawings belonging to a corporation or, possibly, to the artist. Some of them are promotional photographs which again probably belong to a corporation. Some are old photographs for which the copyright holder is the photographer or his heirs.

Finally, if there is indeed a message from the corporation, it must come directly from it. Please have the corporation send an e-mail directly, with a CC-BY license -- not CC-BY-NC. They must say why they own the copyright to those images that are not obviously theirs including the old photographs. Please tell them to refer to ticket #2012032710004328.

I should add that OTRS does have German speaking volunteers, but their backlog is well over a month. I am sure you would rather have this handled quickly, even though Google Translate and I need a little more help from you. Jim . . . . Jameslwoodward (talk to me) 10:40, 27 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]

which Google translate renders as
