Our first steps tour and our frequently asked questions will help you a lot after registration. They explain how to customize the interface (for example the language), how to upload files and our basic licensing policy (Wikimedia Commons only accepts free content). You don't need technical skills in order to contribute here. Be bold when contributing and assume good faith when interacting with others. This is a wiki. More information is available at the community portal. You may ask questions at the help desk, village pump or on IRC channel #wikimedia-commons (webchat). You can also contact an administrator on their talk page. If you have a specific copyright question, ask at the copyright village pump. |

Tip: Categorizing images
[edit]
Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.
Here's how:
1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:
2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.
[[Category:Category name]]
For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:
[[Category:Astronomical diagrams]]
[[Category:Comets]]
This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".
When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").
Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.BotMultichillT 06:17, 15 September 2009 (UTC)

File:USTARSepissue.jpg has been marked as a possible copyright violation. Wikimedia Commons only accepts free content—that is, images and other media files that can be used by anyone, for any purpose. Traditional copyright law does not grant these freedoms, and unless noted otherwise, everything you find on the web is copyrighted and not permitted here. For details on what is acceptable, please read Commons:Licensing. You may also find Commons:Copyright rules useful, or you can ask questions about Commons policies at the Commons:Help desk. If you are the copyright holder and the creator of the file, please read Commons:But it's my own work! for tips on how to provide evidence of that.
The file you added has been deleted. If you have written permission from the copyright holder, please have them send us a free license release via COM:VRT. If you believe that the deletion was not in accordance with policy, you may request undeletion. (It is not necessary to request undeletion if using VRT; the file will be automatically restored at the conclusion of the process.) Warning: Wikimedia Commons takes copyright violations very seriously and persistent violators will be blocked from editing.

File:Old Main History.JPG
[edit]I'm curious how you can be the author of a photo from 1903. I would like to caution you to only claim authorship of file, images, and photos that you really claim ownership of. If it is discovered that you are not the true owner of the file, then you could be blocked from editing and adding files. --TreyGeek (talk) 18:27, 27 September 2009 (UTC)
I will fix it asap. I am not the original author, we all know that. I was, more or less, guessing when it was taken. I know, though, this work is irrevocably in the public domain because it was first published in the United States without copyright notice prior to 1978. I have a bunch of photos of the school, and I must have uploaded this one like I did the others. --TxStateFAN (talk) 18:49, 27 September 2009 (UTC)
- Again, I would urge you to be very careful what you claim ownership of. For example, File:AleckLibrary.JPG strongly matches the banner pic on the library's website (http://www.library.txstate.edu/about/about-the-library.html). I would hate for someone to be banned from Wikipedia for something like this. If you have uploaded material that you are not the author of I would encourage you to remove them. If you are really the author, then all should be okay. --TreyGeek (talk) 18:54, 27 September 2009 (UTC)
- I see your point. --TxStateFAN (talk) 18:57, 27 September 2009 (UTC)

[edit]I noticed you recently uploaded a picture of President Obama during his visit to Texas State in 2008. According to the picture notes, you claim that you took the picture on March 4, 2008. Obama visited the campus on February 28, 2008. So, I'm unsure of why there is a discrepancy there.
- Please show me where I stole the Obama picture from. I took it while he was in town and my camera said March 4. If the date on the camera is wrong, then that is my bad. --TxStateFAN (talk) 04:02, 17 May 2010 (UTC)
I will also note, while I'm here. I've discovered that several other pictures you have uploaded and that you claim to be the owner of, are actually owned by Texas State University. I have found the pictures on the school's University Marketing Department's PhotoBank. Claiming ownership of photos you did not take and uploaded, possibly without permission, is not acceptable. I'm in contact with the University now to see if they want the photos taken down, or if we can simply change the claim of ownership from you to them. I will also be talking with some Wikipedia administrators in charge of copyright violations about this issue. Consider this to be a formal warning on this issue. Continuing to upload pictures that do not belong to you and claiming ownership could result in you being blocked from uploading additional files and possibly being blocked from Wikipedia. --TreyGeek (talk) 14:12, 14 March 2010 (UTC)
- Thank you for your concern. I, too, am in contact with Texas State University and the pictures there are fine. If you notice in the discussion page, they have sent someone from Public Relations to monitor the changes made to the page. --TxStateFAN (talk) 04:02, 17 May 2010 (UTC)
- If you did not take the pictures, you should not claim ownership of them when uploading them to Wikipedia or to WikiMedia Commons. You should properly attribute the true owners and the correct copyright. You'll see from the notice below I have flagged your recent upload as a copyright violation. I will also be contacting a Wikipedia administrator about your other uploads. --TreyGeek (talk) 02:04, 18 May 2010 (UTC)

Notification about possible deletion
[edit]Some contents have been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether they should be kept or not. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at their entry.
If you created these pages, please note that the fact that they have been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with them, such as a copyright issue. Please see Commons:But it's my own work! for a guide on how to address these issues. |
